Pat Farmer and recipient Nathan

Speaker 1:

I just want to say a big hello to everybody. I’m here with Nathan this morning, and we’re talking about Club Cares and the wonderful work that they do. Hey, Nathan, can you tell everybody a little bit about your life and why you’re in the situation that you’re in and what Club Cares has been able to do for you.

Nathan:

Sure. In 2008 in November, I was pretty much practicing on my BMX bike. I used to race BMX and pretty much just started doing Motorcross as well. I was off work from another injury at the time, and I remember the whole day I was rushing to my brother’s school to drop off his uniform because he forgot it. After that, me and my mate pretty much went and checked out some jumps at Dutton Park, and I just didn’t make one. I went over the handlebars and landed straight on the back of my neck. I fractured the C6 and C7 in my neck, and ever since then, I’m stuck in a wheelchair.

Speaker 1:

Life takes all sort of twists and bends and turns and things from time to time, but I suppose it’s then at those moments that all of those look towards friends or look toward people that can support us, and I understand that your family has been incredibly supportive towards you. I understand that you’re getting married. In fact, you’re getting married really soon, so you’ve got something fantastic to look forward to, but also, do you mind telling everyone about the multiple times and the work that Club Cares is actually done for you and how it’s assisted you to this point.

Nathan:

Definitely. Club Cares has helped me out about 4 times now. I had gone to the states 3 times, and every time they’ve come on board and helped me out massively. They paid for nearly half the trip pretty much each time, which is huge. The way we fundraise to do rehab is to do BBQs pretty much outside local business. The support from Club Cares has been amazing.

Speaker 1:

You’ve got to go to the states for this rehab?

Nathan:

Yeah. I did at the time. The facility in San Diego is called Project Walk, and they have the best in the world at the moment.

Speaker 1:

They’ve already made some leading with you because from what I understand the doctors told you that you wouldn’t be even able to dress yourself after you had the accident, and I understand that when you proposed you were in a walking frame, and then, you knelt down and proposed to your future wife.

Nathan:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

I think that’s pretty incredible. You’ve come a long way with all of that.

I really want to encourage as many people as possible to get out there and to buy a ticket in the Art Union, the Club Cares Art Union. Not only is it a great opportunity to help people like Nathan and the many many people that Club Cares has already helped and will continue to help on into the future, but it’s a great opportunity to get involved with some fantastic prizes. In fact, from the 17th of this month, from the 17th of January right up to the major draw prize, which is going to happen on the 29th of March. We’ve got weekly prizes where you can win $2,500 each week and then your name goes back into the barrel with all of that. You can win that prize multiple times between now and the final drawing in March as well as that opportunity to win $50,000 worth of gold bullion as one of the major prizes. There is $15,000 that you can spend at Harvey Norman Store, an electrical goods throughout Harvey Norman’s. There’s another prize, then of course, the major prize. The major prize which is a $115,000 BMW 4 Series. I’ve driven this car. It’s an incredible piece of machinery and a great opportunity to park it in your garage.
